The Island Of Donousa Photo: The Island Of Donousa

Donousa is a picturesque Greek island in the Aegean sea. This is the most Eastern island of the group of Small Cyclades. The island of Donousa is located about 15 km East of Chora and 25 km North of Amorgos. The area of the island is only about 14 sq. km.

Information about the history of Donousa to our times remained very small. Archaeologists believe that the island was inhabited in the early bronze age (the heyday of the Cycladic culture, 3rd Millennium BC). Probably 10-7 centuries BC, the island flourished, as evidenced by the remains of a fortified settlement and burial, found in the southeastern part of the island, Dating back to the geometric period. During the Roman Empire the island was a place of exile, and in the middle ages was used by pirates as a refuge. In the days of domination in the region of the Ottoman Empire, the island was already inhabited.

Today tiny but incredibly beautiful and almost untouched by mass tourism, the island of Donousa is a real Paradise for lovers of peace and solitude, those wishing to relax away from the bustle of the city. The island boasts many beautiful beaches, among which deserve special attention beaches Kedros, Stavros, Livadia, Ficio, Mesa Amos, Kalotaritissa, Limni, Tripiti and Vathi Limenaria.

The main settlement of the island – the port of Donoussa (or Stavros). Here you will find some excellent tavernas where you can enjoy the excellent local cuisine, cafes, a mini market, a bakery and a small selection of accommodation and one of the best beaches on the island.

Among the attractions of Donousa is worth noting the Church of the Holy cross, the Church of Panagia, the abandoned village of Messaria, the old windmill, the ruins of a geometric settlement, the Church of St. Sophia and St. John, as well as two extraordinarily beautiful cave – Tocopilla and the Cave wall.
