New Athos monastery is a male monastery, located in the city of New Athos at the foot of mount Athos. New Athos monastery was founded by monks of the Russian St. Panteleimon monastery in 1875 the construction of the monastery was carried out by a well known architect from St. Petersburg N. N. Nikonov. Charter of the new Athos monastery was approved in 1879 by Tsar Alexander II.

The monastery is one of the most majestic works of neo-Byzantine style on the territory of Abkhazia. The monastery complex consists of six temples. The most majestic of buildings of the monastery is the Cathedral, consecrated in honor of the great Martyr Panteleimon. The North-Western part of the temple is decorated with 50-meter high bell tower, which houses the premises of the refectory, painted with frescoes.

The solemn consecration of the high altar of the monastery took place in 1888, Attended the ceremony the Emperor Alexander III was donated to the temple musical chimes, which to the present day adorn the bell tower. In that place, where they met the king and the Abbot of the monastery, a chapel was built, and a pathway by which the Emperor passed from the pier to the temple, the monks called Royal Avenue, and manned its cypress trees.

New Athos monastery became the largest religious center in the Caucasian black sea coast. Metochion of the monastery was located in Novorossiysk, St. Petersburg, Sukhumi, Yeysk, Tuapse, Pitsunda and highland village Pskhu. The monastery was a parochial school and factory enterprises. In addition, the monastery had its own railway.

In 1924 "for counter-revolutionary agitation" the monastery was closed. During Soviet rule, the monastery had long been in ruins, after the buildings were used as warehouses, tourist camps, historical Museum and a military hospital. To revive the monastery began only in 1994

In 2008 in new Athos monastery had been repaired, and after a year at the main Cathedral flashed new dome.
