Skyscraper on wall street, 40 – one of the most famous in the United States. The reason two circumstances: the story of a giant building and its current host.
In the late twenties of the last century, architects Craig Severance and Yasuo Matsui designed for the Bank of Manhattan skyscraper with a height of 260 meters. The client had an ambitious goal: to build the tallest building in the world. It was planned initially on 41 meters higher than the famous Woolworth building, completed in 1913, and 60 centimeters than being built near the Chrysler building. Guaranteed to outperform its competitor, the architects added the project is still 23 meters. They were confident of winning.
But the millionaire Walter Chrysler used a secret weapon: his engineers had secretly assembled inside the building under construction in stainless steel spire height of 38 meters. When it was installed, the Chrysler building overtook wall street, 40 – however, only eleven months until the building was not included the Empire state building.
The skyscraper could not be the most high, but the number of records he set. Despite the difficult construction conditions (soft ground, close to the site), he completed was just over a year. Extremely complex Foundation laid in just three weeks. Internal steel support frame mounted for 93 days.
The skyscraper quickly won the title of "pearl of the wall street". Its turquoise pyramidal crown stands out on the skyline of Manhattan. The building itself was built in the art Deco style, its lower six floors are decorated with neo-classical colonnade, the facades are covered with limestone.
20 may 1946 the US air force planes in thick fog crashed into the facade of the building at 58 floors, breaking a three-meter hole in the masonry. Killed the entire crew of five airmen. Amazingly, falling bricks don't hit anyone on the street.
Commercial fate of the giant was unenviable. In 1982 it was bought by the President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos, but when the dictator was toppled, his assets frozen, the skyscraper has been neglected. In 1995 it was purchased by one of the most extravagant people in America is a developer, investor, television host, writer, billionaire Donald trump. Initially it was planned to place in the top half of the building residential apartments, but the plan failed. Later tried to sell the building, but buyers of the amount requested is not found. Businessman energetic and risky, trump was able to splurge to the nines, and then again to get to his feet. While he renovated the building, and today it shines in all its splendor. Its second name was trump building.
