Ledra Street Photo: Ledra Street

Located almost in the heart of Nicosia, Ledra street is one of the main shopping streets of the city. Its length is slightly more than one kilometer, but it is in two States in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus. Your name street got the name of the ancient city, which once was located on the place where later was built Nicosia.

A large part Leary, about 800 meters, located in the Greek part of the island, approximately 150 meters is located on Turkish territory. The remaining 70 meters are nobody owned by a buffer zone, which is today occupied by UN peacekeepers. The military had set up his headquarters in the famous hotel "Ledra". Surprisingly, initially, their task was to protect the inhabitants of the Turkish part of the island from terrorist attacks by the Greek Cypriots, which increased during the middle of last century. At the time, Ledru was even called "the dead mile" because of the constant bloody battles.

Now Ledra is completely safe and pedestrian – where you can stroll, relax on the benches and shop in local stores and kiosks.

Until recently, the street was divided barricade a width of three meters. But in 2008, Ledra was open, which was a milestone for the island, as it is another step toward dialogue between the two States. Now to cross the border, citizens of the southern part of the island only need to produce documents, but the Turkish Cypriots are still forced to undergo the full procedure up to the visa stamps in my passport.
