The remains of the Palace of Vouni Photo: the Remains of the Palace of Vouni

The Palace of Vouni, or at least what was left of it, is located on a rocky plateau, which rises above the sea 250 meters. It is believed that originally this building was built around the beginning of the fifth century BC by the ruler of the city of Marion to monitor the settlement of Salt, after its residents spoke out against the Persians. However, when the Greek army in 449 BCE, led by General Cimon captured Kition and Marion, thereby removing the Persian rule, the Palace was rebuilt several times. Originally built in the Oriental style, after the reconstruction it became more like a typical Greek building.

Then in the Palace complex included several sanctuaries and three large terraces, one of which was situated the Palace area of 4 thousand sq. m. Scientists suggest that the Palace was more than 130 rooms. In its center was a huge pool. One of the main features of this building was that thanks to an ingenious system of water supply to almost every room was supplied with fresh water. In the Western part of the facilities were discovered baths, which were also equipped with a perfect system of pipes, which were both cold and hot water.

On the other terrace stood a temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. It was there, in addition to a variety of sculptures, treasures were stored. And on the lower terrace were homes for ordinary people and workers.

However, the castle was completely destroyed in the year 380 BC as a result of a strong fire made by Persians, again seized power, after which survived only load-bearing walls. Since then, the Palace has not been restored.
