At the foot of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, near the Church of St. John the Baptist is a monument to the leaders of the militia 1612 - Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky. Monumental construction was installed in November 2005 and is a smaller replica of the Moscow monument with one exception - the lack of mentioning the year of installation.

The history of the monument began in 1803, when members of the Free society of lovers of the Sciences, arts and literature received a proposal to start collecting funds for the construction of the monument to the people's heroes 1612. Originally the monument was to be erected near Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, where were collected the militia district superintendent Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Mikhaylovich Pozharsky against the Polish-Lithuanian invaders. In 1807, the sculptor Ivan Martos publishes the first engraving of the obelisk and in 1808 wins the competition for the best project of the monument. The project was approved by Emperor Alexander and interest in the creation of the monument after the Patriotic war of 1812 reinforces the importance of the idea to a national scale. In 1818, the decision to install a monument on the main square of Moscow. In Nizhny Novgorod as compensation in the main square was erected an obelisk with gilded bronze images of national heroes.

After almost two hundred years of injustice against Nizhny Novgorod was corrected on the initiative of the mayor of Moscow. In 2005, the Nativity Church, from the porch which in 1611 Kuzma Minin called Nizhegorodtsev to protect Moscow from the poles, was installed a copy of the Moscow monument by Zurab Tsereteli. In a relatively short period of Nizhny Novgorod attraction has gained popularity among Russian and foreign tourists, becoming part of the history of the city. Just above the monument, between the walls of the Kremlin and the Church was installed in the bell, ending the historic old picture of Nizhny Novgorod.
