Old Orhei in the same city of the Republic of Moldova is a Museum-reserve, located on the Cape Pestere, in a picturesque rocky gorge, 60 km North-East of Chisinau. Reserve Museum under the open sky has another name "Moldovan Troy".

In the Old Orhei archaeologists have found traces of several civilizations. Here there was a Geto-Dacian defensive fortress (VI-I centuries B. The local area was inhabited since ancient times. At the beginning of the XIV century this territory was conquered by the Golden Horde, after which this place was founded the city called Shehr-al-Jadid. At the time, Serch-al-Jadid was an important transit point for troops during the conquest. In the second half of the 60-ies of the XIV century the city was destroyed. In 20-ies of the XV century there appeared the Moldovan village of Orhei. In XV century the famous ruler of the Principality of Moldova Stefan cel Mare ordered to build a stone fortress Orhei. In the middle of XVI century, local residents moved to a new place - 18 km to the North of the former. After a while, they founded a city called Orhei.

Old Orhei is the only one in Moldova monument of architecture of the city type. Archaeological excavations here began in 1947 and is still going on.
