Theatrical performances in pécs were being staged since the beginning of the 19th century in German and Hungarian languages. In the absence of one of the theater building they were usually held in large dance halls, hotels. Thus, setting wandered up to 1840. when Mary street was built the first theater. However, half a century later it was destroyed, so far from this building there are only memories and a sketch of the facade.

To meet the cultural demand of the public, the city Council established a Committee headed by the mayor Janos Atingiram for coordinating the planning of a new project theatre. The competition was held in 1890. It won Adolf lang and Adolph Steinhardt, who were granted 10 000 HUF for the project. Premiere at the new theatre took place on 5 October 1895.

After the deterioration of the building in 1986 began a 5-year reconstruction, which resulted in the theater got a modern orchestra pit and modern technical equipment.
