Calheta de nesquim – an area located along the southern coast of the municipality of Lajes do Pico. Calheta de nesquim is the smallest district in the municipality (343 people).

The history of this area begins in the sixteenth century, when the ship was returning from Brazil, and loaded with wood, was wrecked off the southern coast of the island of Pico. The team survived only three people and a small dog who led them to a small Bay. The dog's name was Nesquim, and the Bay was called Calheta de nesquim, which translated from Portuguese means "small Bay Nesquim". This legend served as the basis for the coat of arms of Calheta de nesquim, which depicts a dog, so-called "discoverer" of a small Bay.

In 1851 began the construction of the parish Church on the ruins of an ancient chapel, which was built in the XV century. Grand opening and consecration of the Church took place in 1856. Then was founded the organization "Cooperative Progresso, Kalamansi", whose task included the organization of activities which contributed b economic development of the area. The building was constructed, which made many of the goods for export, among which were ceramic and pottery, and metal products.

Among urban architecture it is worth noting windmills of Maricao, a vivid example of the traditional windmills that were used in the 17th and 18th centuries.
