In 1680 in Plzen came the plague, which claimed hundreds of lives. When it became clear that the epidemic had passed, Heaven the grateful residents ordered the famous sculptor Christian Widmann manufacturing Mariana columns. In 1681 it was solemnly installed in the Market square and since then has not changed its location. So, being in the centre of Pilsen and beating on the left of the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, stay in front of the Renaissance of the column and think about what she is already more than three centuries.

On top of the Plague column you can see the statue of the virgin, which is an exact copy of that image, which is stored in the St. Bartholomew's Cathedral and is considered a real treasure of Pilsen. Gothic statue of the virgin Mary towers over sculptural composition depicting the revered Czech saints: Bartholomew, Roch, Florian, Wenceslas and Rosalia. These monuments belong to the local cutter master Jan Meislik.

In 1714, after the new plague, to existing images on the column were added. Now the Marian column is decorated with statues of three saints: Barbara, Peter of Alcantara, and Francis Xavier.
