Murals, paintings, sculpture and architecture – Lankatilaka Viharaya certainly worthy of attention. Built by Parakramabahu the Great, who ascended the throne in 1153. and remained in power until 1186, Lankatilaka Viharaya incorporates the best features of Sri Lankan architectural style, known as the Sinhala architecture of the temple. The Church has also undergone some updates during the reign of Dambadeniya in the 13th century.
In this temple a lot of features and gives an advantage to other tourist attractions in Kandy. Let's start with the fact that this is an unusual architectural variation, based on common to all Buddhist temples style. You will notice as an abstraction through murals and sculpture turns into something clear and precise. A giant statue, or rather its remains, is a Prime example.
In front of the main entrance to the temple is a hall for preaching, covered with flat tiles, unlike conventional semicircular tiles, it is used to cover the Central part of the roof and create beautiful patterns. Two large images of lions and two figures guards standing facing each other, decorate two walls of the short hallway leading to the house of the spirits. Inside the house of the spirits is a magnificent relic - a twelve-foot statue of Buddha under a beautiful Makara Thorens%b.
Surprisingly, the whole temple was built from one of the mountain massif. In fact, if you look closely you can see the cutouts in the rock used in the creation of Buddha statues. Striking feature of Lankatilaka Viharaya is that the Church is connected with the house of the spirits (five-storey building from the front).
What can be seen now only remnants of the former luxury of the original temple, however they fascinate tourists.
