A monument to St. Simeon of Polotsk was opened in Polotsk 7 September 2003 – day celebration of Belarusian literature. The authors of the monument: sculptor Alexander Finnish, architects Georgy Fedorov and Natalia Cavic. Great educator, teacher, politician, scientist, writer, poet and theologian, Symeon of Polotsk has left an indelible mark in the Belarusian culture.

Simeon of Polotsk (real name Samuel G. Petrovsky-Sinanovic) was born in Polotsk 12 December 1629. Studied at the Kiev-Mohyla Collegium Catholic high school. In 1656 Simeon of Polotsk adopted Orthodoxy and became a monk. Thanks to his training, he quickly rose through the Church hierarchy. His sermons became famous far beyond the borders of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, highly appreciated the righteousness and scholarship venerable monk, trusted Simeon of Polotsk the education of their children, on the Outlook which had a great influence. Especially, to the Princess Sophia, which is believed to Simeon of Polotsk his spiritual mentor until the end of his days. In Moscow Simeon of Polotsk by order of the king also founded a Latin school for clerks of secret order.

Simeon of Polotsk wrote a very unusual poems, placing them in the form of a star, cross or heart. In the XVII century, this skill was highly valued, and in our days, the elegant literature of the educated monk strikes the imagination of his contemporaries.
