Near the Douro river, near Ribeira, is one of the most famous churches in the city of Porto – the Church of Saint Francisco. The Church is situated in the historic centre, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. In 1233, was founded the Church, but it was built only in 1400.
The building was built in the Gothic style and is famous for interior decoration in the Baroque style, made in the 18th century. Altars, railings, columns and arches are covered with gilded carved wood depicting garlands, angels and animals. To perform these decorations went about 200 kg of gold powder.
The main facade of the Franciscan Church is decorated with a large and skillfully executed the rose window of the Gothic style. This window is the only original decoration of the main facade of the building. The Western portal of the Church is made in the Baroque style, decorated Solomon's pillars and the statue of St. Francis, whose figure was carved from a single piece of granite. The southern portal, which overlooks the river, as executed in the Gothic style and has a triangular pediment with a pentagram. You get there by walking up the stairs leading from the main facade. The entrance to the portal consists of a group of Gothic architraves, and the inner part is decorated with an arcade in the style of "Mudejar" (Islamic influence).
Among the altars of the Church attracts the attention of the most impressive of them is the altar in the Northern lateral nave to the famous "Tree of Jesse", a gilt composition in the form of a tree trunk with branches that support twelve sculptures. "Tree of Jesse" is the genealogy of Christ with the image of the twelve kings of Israel.
