Berg's market is a historical ensemble of buildings between Elizabetes, Dzirnavu and Marias in Riga designed by Konstantin Pesenson.
Kristaps Kalninsh was born in 1843 on a farm Bermula (Dobele district, Latvia) in the family of a craftsman. At age 16 he made his way to Riga, and since then it has become reported by Kristaps Berg, as in all the best places were in the possession of the Germans. He later became a famous holder of the houses, a great industrialist and philanthropist. In 1875 Berg built his first apartment building on Elizabetes street-10, together with the architect Janis Baumanis, who later designed it each year.
In 1887 it was intended construction market, which represents a shopping complex for pedestrians, which would, on the idea of Berg, included a commercial court, arcade and gallery. Corps from the street Marias found its eclectic facades. Next year appeared the building from the street Dzirnavu. And after 4 years they were joined by business line with a luxury entrance from Elizabetes street. In 1895 appeared the last, the poorest and hastily built, 4-storey stucco building in the alleys of the Bazaar, where it is currently located at the hotel. Finally, in 1900, was built on 6 floors, and the luxury home market, located at the corner of Marias and Elizabetes street. For merchants was equipped with 131 seats, which were immediately occupied.
Berg's market is unique. But Berg, during the laying of the first stones had a different opinion about the purpose of his creation. Kristaps Kalninsh, being a simple guy from the village, wanted to feel in school more native spirit. The upper floors were given over to the Inns, where in 1888 at the III festival of music is located 800 performers. Also in Berga Bazaar housed and stable.
After the death of Berg, his sons took care of the Bazaar properly at first, but large buildings here are not built. In 1909, the house on Dzirnavu street, was fitted with Sewerage and water supply.
In 1912 Arved Berg bought a new ground from the street Elizabetes street. Here he was going to clean wooden house 1815 buildings in which no value and benefits not seen, and erected a 5-storey apartment house. Bergi did not like the wooden house in the Bazaar, but despite this, it was not demolished 2 houses of 3 ex. But ultimately, the ideas of Berg and was not implemented.
After the First World war the owners of the Bazaar, though, didn't care what was happening with the pre-war pride. For profit Bergi arcade closed up all along the streets, forced the courts of workshops, full of scandals. But in 1982, was intended to take out half the buildings in the next 18 years to build a perfect socialist Paradise of shopping, Parking and management, whose border was adjacent to the street Krishana Baron. The reality proved to be not so violently as heirs Berg in 1994 organized the reconstruction of Berg's Bazaar is much softer and more delicate than and reached its initial gloss.
