Museum of contemporary art Roskilde was founded in 1991. The main impetus for the creation of the Museum was the idea of focus and open to people of contemporary art and its various directions. The opening of the Museum was promoted by the municipality of Roskilde, which made possible the existence of such cultural institutions. A few years later, in 1994, the government approved the Museum, making it national.

Today the Museum has to deal with modern information, both Danish and international, including sound recordings, videos, Internet art. Exhibitions are held both inside the Museum and beyond its walls. Among other activities, the Museum every two years becomes the venue of the festival ACTS, dedicated to performance art.

The Museum conducts research in the field of contemporary art, serves as a storage location for contemporary art, presenting the newest trends and also contains a collection of Danish and international art. Over the past 25 years the collection has been enriched, their expansion continues to this day. The Museum considers it a priority to organize educational tours for schoolchildren and students.

Museum of contemporary art is an independent institution funded by state subsidies and private investment. Now the Museum occupies the building of the Royal residence city of Roskilde. It was built in 1733 by order of king Christian VI, and the main architect was Lauritz de Tyr.
