At the foot of the mönchsberg mountain in the early seventeenth century were built the Palace stables, and a little later - the building of the riding School. In 1917 in Salzburg decided to pursue theater and Opera festivals, so these buildings were rebuilt by the architect Clemens Holzmeister helped him in the artist Oskar Kokoschka.

In its original form preserved the facade of the building of the former stables and the Western portal of the building of the riding School. The festival is partially embedded deep into the rock, which frees up more space for spectators. For example, the auditorium of the Bolshoi theatre is for 2400 spectators.
