The Museum of modern art in Salzburg consists of two museums, which are located in different places. Rupertinum is the main building of the Museum and is situated in the centre of Salzburg, next to the Palais des Festivals. The Museum was built in the early Baroque style in 1633. Here, in the centre of the Old Town for many centuries was the Seminary. Until 1974, the building was used as a student hostel. The facade of the Museum attract the attention of beautiful tiles made by Hundertwasser.
Rupertinum arose due to the inhabitant of Salzburg, which he gave to the city of his vast collection of art of the 20th century. The Museum was opened in 1983 and until 2004 was the only Museum of modern art in Salzburg. In 1998 he organized an international architectural competition for the construction of the new building of the Museum. An 11-member jury chaired by Luigi Snozzi from Switzerland, chose the design of the Munich team of architects Frederick Goff Swing from among 145 applications. The Museum was built in 2004 on a mountain rock of the mönchsberg. New Museum building has 4 floors and is designed in modern style: the marble facade and split a special sutures, which act as conditioners. After the opening of the new Museum, Rupertinum entered into its composition.
Both buildings of the Museum are about 3000 square meters of exhibition space. These spaces allow you to take a variety of exhibitions, presenting to the public new artists. In the large halls of the new Museum are always held the international exhibition of modern art. On the third floor of the new Museum building was opened on a panoramic restaurant with an outdoor terrace with wonderful views of Salzburg.
