The monastery of Dirichlet enters the group of the few rock monasteries that were built and inhabited during the XII-XIV centuries. They represent a complex of medieval churches, monasteries and monastic cells, hewn in the rocks on the southern and South-Eastern slopes of the Shumen plateau.

The monasteries are the unique monuments that tell about the culture, educational and religious life of the times of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It is assumed that their occurrence is associated with the origin and development of medieval Bulgaria Hesychasm (Greek means "calm", "privacy"). The essence of this ancient Christian tradition is to constantly strive to achieve spiritual perfection by penance, renunciation of worldly goods.

The first researcher monasteries Shumen plateau was Karel Shkorpil. He and his followers found that are discovered in this territory the facilities really were once inhabited by hermits and monks.
