The biggest cave in Latvia (and the Baltics) is the Gutman's cave. Its volume is 500 cubic meters and a surface area of 170 sq. m. the Length of this niche reaches 18.8 meters, width – 12 meters, and the maximum ceiling height is 10 meters. The cave is located on the territory of Turaida Park, on the banks of the river Gauja.

Many centuries ago, the river level was almost at the level of the cave, it appeared from the interaction of a spring flowing from a cave, with the Gauja river. Spring is healing, it is associated with an interesting legend.

According to legend, once lived here Livonian chief Mindaug, he had an unfaithful wife. As punishment for adultery, the chief ordered to bury his wife alive in the high Bank of the river Gauja. According to legend, the spring was formed from the tears of the wife of Rendova, and he may have washed away a large cave. Later, the healer, who lived in the village, successfully treated people with water from this source of healing. Doctors named "Guterman". Translated from German, this word means "good man", in Latvian the same meaning – "the caves".

Near the Gutman's cave is a tourist information center where you can obtain information about the cave, as well as nearby natural and historic objects that are in the territory of Gauja National Park.

The walls of the Gutman's cave formed of thick red Sandstone, which was formed during the Devonian period, about 410 million years ago. The walls are covered with inscriptions, which in themselves are of historic value. The oldest inscriptions date from the 16th and 17th centuries.

There is another famous legend called the legend of Turaida rose. Near the Gutman cave, there is another, which might more properly be called a cave, but deep niche. According to the legend, it knocked out the gardener Victor Hales, who was in love with the Rose of Turaida. He crated this cave, in order that his lover could see out his work at garden valley. According to the legend, the Maya preferred to die than to surrender in love with her mercenary Turaida castle Adam Jakubowski and betray her beloved Victor.

Another legend is devoted to the Damn cave located higher than the Gutman's cave. Once the demon was sneaking past this place, but suddenly started singing roosters. As the demon was unable to bear the light of day, he hid in the nearest cave. He frightened and mocked people passing by. His fetid breath bloated all the walls of the cave, making them black.
