Buyuk mosque is a nine-domed Church, built in 1494. The mosque was erected on the foundations of an ancient Christian monastery. This beautiful building, whose walls are covered with ivy and vines. In different years was located here: hospital, library, printing house. Currently this building is the oldest in Bulgaria Archaeological Museum, founded in 1879.

Over the years the Museum has been collected impressive dimensions of the exposition, which currently has more than 55 thousand of exhibits. In addition, it provides the richest country in the collection of coins – more than one million samples.

The first floor of the Archaeological Museum dedicated to the Thracian antiquities, Roman, Greek and Byzantine periods of the Bulgarian history. The mosaics of Hagia Sophia, early Christianity, fragments of the Roman and Greek tombs – the tombs of noblemen, tombstones (e.g., discovered during the archaeological excavations in the city of Sofia plate (III-IV centuries and the Roman sarcophagus from II-III century, found near the town of Lovech), deer figurine made of bronze, dated to the VIII century BC, etc.

One of the main Museum treasures in this exhibition – Multitranche treasure – thirteen gold Thracian vessels weight 12, 5 kg. Historians believe that the ancient priests used them for ritual purposes. The exhibits are presented in a separate secure room.

In the collection of the first floor is also found in the city of Stara Zagora the statue of the God Apollo. It is made of bronze, covered with gold leaf. The statue is missing a leg and both arms. Bulgarian scientists believe that the sculptor was a pupil of the great Greek master Praxiteles. Of interest and the statue of "Resting Satyr". She was discovered in the village Riben, near the town of Pleven. It is assumed that it is an exact copy of one of the sculptures of Praxiteles.

A great impression on visitors produces a copy of the Madara horseman statue, real size. The original is carved in the rock near the village of Madara.
