The Church Of St. Panteleimon in Boyana Photo: Church Of St. Panteleimon in Boyana

Church of Saint Panteleimon or, as it is called, the Boyana Church is a small, but nevertheless very interesting temple is located in Boyana, a suburb of the capital of Bulgaria, near the foot of Vitosha mountain. The building was built in several stages: the Eastern part (the oldest) appeared not later than the X-XI centuries and was a small chapel. In the XIII century, to it, on the orders of Tsar Kaloyan, built a two-storey temple, and after several centuries, in the twentieth century, to the architectural complex were added and two-story West porch.

Church of Saint Panteleimon is a world heritage site by UNESCO, there are unique in their artistic qualities of the fresco, which, in the opinion of many researchers, some of the best specimens of the pictorial art of the middle ages. Here are preserved wall paintings of two periods: XI-XII centuries and 1259. Early frescoes executed in a dry manner (however, the tradition of that time) Byzantine style and accompanied by Greek inscriptions. But more interesting are the frescoes of the second period: in 1259 they were painted right over the old ones, and are universally recognized masterpiece of world art.

In total, on the walls of the temple. Panteleimon depicted almost ninety scenes from the Scriptures. Very common figure of Jesus Christ (20 times more). Here we see him at different ages and different life situations, which symbolizes his arduous journey and the obstacles he overcame to bring people love and forgiveness. Also on the walls of the Church you can see the image of Saint Panteleimon, Saint Nicholas (the temple was dedicated to him for a while), the virgin Mary, patron Saint of the Church of Tsar Kaloyan and his wife – Desislava.

The uniqueness of the frescoes of this Church is that they were written in the style of the distinguishing painting. All the characters are highly individualized and among the hundreds of persons will not find a single duplicate: every image that expresses your character and their emotions. These frescoes are also drawn to realism in the depiction of reality: people of different social backgrounds drawn here in clothes and surrounded by objects that are traditional for their status and the time in which they lived.
