A monument to the policeman Photo: a monument to the policeman

The unusual monument was erected in St. Petersburg in may 1998 on Malaya Konyushennaya. The opening was timed to coincide with the bicentennial of the Ministry of internal Affairs and the tercentenary of the founding of St. Petersburg. On the marble pedestal is cast in bronze with a two-meter statue of a policeman, dressed in full ceremonial ammunition.

Originally the monument caused a storm of emotions among the citizens of the city and was perceived differently. Some believed the monument is a reminder of the former "Institute of policemen", in other words the monument reminded of the powerlessness of ordinary people. At the moment, the monument does not cause such intense political emotions, the passions around him subsided. The monument fits the city interior and now nothing but the curiosity of others does not matter. He proudly stands next to the Church of St. Catherine, at the intersection of which forms the Swedish lane and Malaya Konyushennaya street.

Near the monument is a building which houses the Consulate of Sweden, and right behind him is a small, very cozy cafe. Petersburgers joking, saying that the policeman is to protect these objects. The truth is he's not very good at it – the walls of nearby houses "decorates" the so-called wall paintings, or, in other words, graffiti-covered walls. Not always, though, this painting is successful.

Today's young generation, probably, does not represent, to whom a monument. Peter far in 1718 by his decree has established a special service. The service was according to his plan to protect the townspeople from dashing people and keep order. Thus, people on the service needs to be good hosts in the city, so gorodovie. Hence the name – the policeman. Policemen existed for a long time, their functions have changed over time, and the service itself have recently reformed.

During the reign of Alexander the Second policemen were called by the police, and the police officer supervisor (modern analogue of the precinct). Selected then the policemen only males with a strong physique, tall (175 cm and above), aged 25 years. In addition to these criteria, the applicant for the position of policeman should have good health and vision, ingenuity. To them were shown another important requirement, which would do well to adopt in the selection of modern police. The speech of the candidate in the policemen had to be articulate, literate and well supplied.

Applicants for the position of policeman after selection were trained, and after the exam received the appointment. For his dangerous, difficult and much needed service, the policemen received a good salary and retirement benefits they were entitled to a decent pension.

The duties of a policeman were different and were different from current responsibilities of the police. For example, they controlled the lighting of the streets at night, watched the sanitary condition of outlets. At the request of the citizens they were supposed to help to make requests, complaints to the city authorities. And, of course, the main work consisted in the protection of the order of the day and night, prevention of offenses and their prevention.

In their respective territories policemen were in law enforcement, as good hosts. The work of policemen was monitored, both a public and secret. Which has a positive effect on their work, random people gorodovie not served. The citizens appealed to him on any question and the policemen were doing their best, and enjoyed well-deserved respect and authority.
