One of the three suspension bridges, preserved to our days in St. Petersburg, is the Bank bridge between Spassky and Kazan Islands through the canal. This pedestrian crossing was built to move across the Catherine canal to the entrance of the assignation Bank in 1825. Because of the "neighborhood" with the next bridge Bank was renamed Bank.

Engineers V. A. Khristianovich, and V. K. Tetter become sponsors of the draft, fascinated, as many St. Petersburg city planners, the creation of so-called chain suspension bridges, kept above water by metal chains. Applied in the construction of Bank of the bridge circuit are deeply embedded in the mouths of cast iron griffins Sokolova like the last, sitting in the corners of the crossing, trying to hold the bridge.

The Gryphon is a mythical monster with the body of a lion, the head of a lion or eagle, white wings and sharp claws. Architectural transcript of the Griffin – a very symbolic: because he is often depicted with a lion's body, eagle's head, and taloned eagle's feet, then this combination symbolizes the connection of sharp mind and great force. Because of that, griffins symbolically represent Petersburg. On the Bank bridge griffins established not by chance: the Greek myths tell us that they had a reputation of a reliable guardians of treasures, the best guardians of gold. Therefore, the griffins were selected as the main decorative elements of the bridge near the Bank building.

Besides the beautiful griffins Bank bridge "sported" a beautiful openwork lattice pattern of revealed fans and palm leaves. In the end, Bank bridge was known as the most ornate and original construction in the areas surrounding his home on the banks of Griboedov canal, looked a lot easier. Its original architectural design of the bridge known even far beyond the borders of the city. However, the bridge seamlessly into the surrounding environment: the rich decor of the bridge were compensated by its compact size (just over 25 yards in length and about 2 meters in width).

Wings of griffins holding Bank bridge were made of gilded copper. It is attracted to the bridge of lovers of easy prey, trying to scrape the gilding off grid and sculptures. But to cash in on this kind of "prey" was impossible - the gold was covered in such a thin layer that could only scrape the tiniest gold dust. But the "miners" do not bother, and, in the end, the griffins and the lattice bridge Bank came into complete disrepair – were badly scratched or broken off all their gold-plated elements. In the late nineteenth century, the grating was removed from the bridge for restoration, after which the trail disappeared. For a long time the Bank of the bridge parapet railings were common, replacing the lost art fence.

In 1949 the wooden fabric of the bridge was repaired. In 1952, project A. L. Rotach and G. F. Perlin iron fence was restored, along with it – and the lights above the heads of griffins.

In 1994, again restored wood flooring paintings of the bridge. In 1997 he undertook the repair of sculptures of griffins and the restoration of the fixed grating. In 2009, with wings recently renovated griffins, like old times, scraped the gilt. In 2010, two griffins more than three months are protective caps for the reason of strengthening of the collapsed portion of the embankment. Turning the channel, and can now be admired Bank by a bridge, this unique incarnation of the romantic tendencies in the art of Russian classicism of the early nineteenth century.
