The Church of the Dormition, located in the city of Stavropol in the assumption cemetery, was founded in June 1847 Funds for its construction were donated by local merchants.
During the construction of the Church was built of local materials: limestone and shell stones Stavropol mountains, lime from Pyatigorsk Russia and Tatar forest, sand Orel beams. The construction of the Church ended in 1849, the Solemn consecration of the temple, with the altar in the name of Dormition of the Theotokos on 15 August of the same year.
Church of the assumption of the blessed virgin Mary - an interesting manifestation of Russian-Byzantine style. Despite all the characteristic features of this style, the temple has individual and strict appearance. By area, the Church is small, but due to its height it looks majestic.
The basis of the architecture of the temple has become the traditional trecastell internal space (actually the temple porch and the altar), clearly expressed in its look. The Central part of the Church above the rest, which is crowned with raised on an octagonal drum head with fixed main cross. At the corners of the roof, you can see four more domes with crosses. In 1873, was built a chapel on the South side of the Church, consecrated in the name of ascension.
Church located on the outskirts of the city, became a parish. Here were the rites of baptism, marriage, burial. Assumption Church – the only one in town, which remained active during the Soviet era. In the 60s the Church began to gradually deteriorate, so in 1966 it was given a major overhaul. And three years later the Church declared a monument of architecture of local importance.
In 1998, on the North side of the temple on the old Foundation began construction of a new chapel, consecrated in the same year, in the name of the Iveron icon of the Mother of God.
The Church is a spiritual and historical complex, which includes the temple itself, the Holy-water chapel, gymnasium and memorial cemetery.
