The Katarina Church Photo: Church Of Katharina

The Katarina Church is one of the main churches in Central Stockholm. The original building was built in the district of södermalm in 1656-1695 years by the architect Jean Valle, who chose the Greek model, with a Central tower in the middle.

The construction of the Church began during the reign of king Charles X and was carried out with few interruptions for over 39 years due to a serious lack of funds. The Church was consecrated in honour of the Princess Catherine, mother of Charles X, the wife of John Casimir and half-sister of Gustav Adolf.

1 may 1723, the Church along with half of the buildings in the district was completely destroyed in a large fire. The restoration of the Church began almost immediately under the direction of Goran Isaiah Edelcrantz, the city architect, and erected on the building of a large octagonal tower. On 17 may 1990 the Church was again burned. Almost nothing but the external walls, there is not. Architect Ove Hedemark was responsible for rebuilding the Church, which was reopened in 1995. Were cast with 4 bells on a sample of the burnt, and the Church acquired a new organ, brought from the Netherlands. The original clock mechanism early 1800s, was also destroyed by fire in 1990 and was replaced during the reconstruction on the electronic clock, virtually maintenance-free.

Several famous Swedes are buried in the cemetery surrounding the Church Catarina, for example, the Minister for foreign Affairs Anna Lindh and popular Dutch-Swedish singer Cornelis Fresvik.

To date, the Katarina Church is one of the 43 churches in the city, which is especially protected in accordance with the Swedish Law on historical heritage.
