One of the architectural attractions Sukhumi is the Annunciation Cathedral. This classic cross-shaped structure, topped by domes, made in neo-Byzantine architectural style. The temple built at the expense of the Orthodox Greek community in the period from 1909 to 1915.

Originally the Church was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and before the great Patriotic war was known as St. Nicholas Greek Church. After the war, the Church received a new, higher status - Cathedral, and consecrated in honour of the Annunciation of the blessed virgin Mary, hence its abbreviated popular name – the Annunciation. But St. Nicholas was not forgotten in this temple and his name revered in novopetrovka (in 1980) the chapel.

In connection with the Church in the 80-ies of the last century under the leadership of the Metropolitan of David was the reconstruction and overhaul of the building of the temple. Completed some side extensions, landscaped surrounding area, erected and consecrated a chapel in honor of St. Nicholas. With the beginning of the new century for the centennial of the temple, in 2010, took considerable repair work. One of the great gifts to believers for the jubilee was gilded Central dome of the Cathedral, made of Chelyabinsk masters. Its bright reflections can rejoice not only parishioners, but also the sailors on the RAID Sukhumi Bay.

Today, the Annunciation Cathedral is the main Cathedral of Pitsunda and Sukhumi-Abkhazian eparchy of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The service at the Cathedral is in four languages: old Church Slavonic, Abkhazian, Greek and Georgian.
