Comana monastery is an Orthodox monastery belonging to the Abkhazian Orthodox Church. The monastery is located in the village of Koman, a half hour drive from the city of Sukhumi.

Comana monastery is a very famous landmark Sukhumi. Every year it is visited by over 50 thousand tourists and pilgrims. The monastery was once buried Archbishop of Constantinople, St. John Chrysostom, the relics of which 438 were transferred to Constantinople.

In 1986, Comana monastery was rebuilt on the foundations of the medieval Church (built before the XI century). The Foundation was a ruin-hall stone structures without protruding to the outside of the apse. The room was lighted by two narrow window openings located in the Western wall and the altar.

In 1992-1993, during the war, the village of Koman has found himself at the centre of fierce fighting between the Georgian and Abkhaz armed formations. During these military events, the village was almost completely destroyed. Suffered and the temple itself. But thanks to the forces of the Abkhazian diocese it was restored. It is now a monastery.

The area around the monastery in ancient times was surrounded by a stone wall. During the restoration of the temple were added some Annex: with the Northern and southern parts built two chapels, and on the West three - story bell tower. During the construction of the bell tower in the ground was found the sarcophagus weighing about a ton. The sarcophagus is carved out of solid limestone blocks.

Monastic life in the monastery was renewed in 2001 at the Church In honour of Saint John Chrysostom see the stone tomb of the Saint and an icon with a particle of his relics.

Today Comana monastery is a monument of Christian culture and one of the two monasteries of Abkhazia, as well as a major centre of pilgrimage.
