The ruins of the Sukhum fortress of Dioscuri – tourist site in the coastal city of Sukhumi. About this object there are many legends, rumors and opinions. Some call it "black Atlantis", some – "Sebastopolis" (similar names – Sebastopol, San Sebastian), and some of "the Dioscuri long ago". Each name is understandable.

In VI. to n. e. on the site of the present capital of Abkhazia was a colony of Miletus Greeks Dioscurias. The name is given in honor of the twins castor and Pollux collectively, known as the Dioscuri, the participants of the Argonauts to Colchis for the Golden fleece". The Greeks discovered small fragments of ancient pottery. Perhaps the ancient Greek colony was destroyed by the conquerors, perhaps – a strong earthquake, more than likely, went under water because of the powerful landslide. Underwater discovered the remains of an ancient city on the sea bottom near the waterfront. Hence the name "black Atlantis". Who came as Romans on the site of the Dioscuri was built the walled city, giving him a resounding name of Sebastopolis (in Russian-"the Holy city"), which is proved by the remains of the foundations of the fortifications of the I-IV centuries. n. e. In VI. in place of the destroyed during the Persian-Byzantine war of Sebastopolis were again the ruins. From the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. the Genoese built a trading post and port. Came followed in the XVIII. the Ottoman Turks built a powerful fortress and called it the Sukhum-Kale (Kale is a fortress).

In the XIX century, after the arrival in Sukhumi, the Russian army in the fortress housed the local garrison, and then there was a prison, where even the ruins of a revolutionary camera Ordzhonikidze. Now the area of the former fortress housed the restaurant "Dioscuri long ago". Fragments of the former citadel is saved, but the excavation is not being carried out.
