The ruins of the Sukhum fortress of Dioscuri – tourist site in the coastal city of Sukhumi. About this object there are many legends, rumors and opinions. Some call it "black Atlantis", some – "Sebastopolis" (similar names – Sebastopol, San Sebastian), and some of "the Dioscuri long ago". Each name is understandable.
In VI. to n. e. on the site of the present capital of Abkhazia was a colony of Miletus Greeks Dioscurias. The name is given in honor of the twins castor and Pollux collectively, known as the Dioscuri, the participants of the Argonauts to Colchis for the Golden fleece". The Greeks discovered small fragments of ancient pottery. Perhaps the ancient Greek colony was destroyed by the conquerors, perhaps – a strong earthquake, more than likely, went under water because of the powerful landslide. Underwater discovered the remains of an ancient city on the sea bottom near the waterfront. Hence the name "black Atlantis". In the XIX century, after the arrival in Sukhumi, the Russian army in the fortress housed the local garrison, and then there was a prison, where even the ruins of a revolutionary camera Ordzhonikidze. Now the area of the former fortress housed the restaurant "Dioscuri long ago". Fragments of the former citadel is saved, but the excavation is not being carried out.
