Opened in 1897, Art Gallery of New South Wales located in Sydney Park "Domain". Today it is the largest public gallery in Sydney and the fourth largest in Australia. Visiting the exhibition halls, in which the art of Australia, Europe and Asia, for free.

In 1871 in Sydney held a public meeting which had decided to create an Art to promote the fine arts through lectures, master classes and regular exhibitions. Until 1879 the main focus of the Academy has been organizing annual art exhibitions, and in 1880, the Academy was dissolved, since the execution of the tasks assumed public Gallery, which was called – Art Gallery of New South Wales. Unfortunately, in 1882 most of the collections the gallery was destroyed in a fire, and over the next 13 years was a question about the necessity of constructing a permanent building for the gallery.

The building by architect Vernon was built in 1897 in the style of classicism. In the same year opened the first two exhibition halls, two opened two years later. Gallery of Watercolors was built in 1901 and completed in 1902 a Large Oval Hall. In 1970 the building was built on "the Wing of Captain cook", in 2003 opened a wing in which exhibited the work of Asian artists. Outside of the building is a bronze sculpture symbolizing the contribution to the art of the four great civilizations – the Roman, Greek, Assyrian and Egyptian.

Today in the exposition of the Art Gallery featuring the work of many Australian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. 44 works are included in the list of the "100 masterpieces of Australian painting." Among the works of European masters paintings by Rubens, Canaletto, Picasso, Rodin, Monet, Cezanne and other famous artists since the 16th century to our days.
