Cathedral of St. James – the most important Church of the city of Szczecin, was built by the inhabitants of the city on the model of St. Mary's Church in lübeck. It's the biggest Church in Pomerania, in the years after the reformation was part of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church, but after the Second world war was the Catholic Church. Cathedral of St. James is situated in the Old town.

The Church was built in 1187 on the wooden chapel. Work on the extension of the temple continued until the fourteenth century. In the second half of the thirteenth century was established pentagonal altar, near which was built free-standing chapel. At the other end of the Gothic nave two towers were built. During a storm in 1456 one of these towers collapsed and destroyed part of the Church, including the Western part of the nave. Reconstruction lasted until 1503, under master John Beneke. Was built one Central tower instead of the previous two.

The Church was destroyed again in 1677, during the Danish-Swedish war and was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1693.

In the late nineteenth century was carried out major repairs of the temple. In 1894 was erected a spire height of 119 meters, crowning the tower of the temple. The Church itself was equipped with electric heating.

Air raids on the night of 16 August 1944 during the Second world war led to a strong destruction of the Church. In the postwar years, the Church wanted to carry, but it is estimated that restoration work will be cheaper than demolition. In 1974 the repairs were completed, it was later restored and spire.
