Taman archaeological Museum is located on Karl Marx street. The Museum itself is a Taman in the Krasnodar branch of historical Museum and brings together research expedition, leading research on the Taman Peninsula. Artifacts found on the territory of the Taman, are transferred to the archaeological Museum and become his exhibits. In Museum exhibits archaeological remains Dating back over two thousand years. The Museum houses exhibits from the excavations Phanagoria, Petraskova settlement, Hermonassa-Tmutarakan, Cape Ruban and others. The collection contains black-lacquered pottery, coins, amphora, terracotta, printing, and other artifacts of ancient cultures.
In the Russian Chronicles mention fabulous Tmutarakan Principality, its location has long been considered controversial among historians and archaeologists of the world. But after the discovery in 1792 Tmutarakan stone during excavations in Taman managed to accurately set its coordinates. The discovery of the stone was of great methodological significance, marking the beginning of domestic palaeography and epitaphic, but also aroused great interest of scientists to the archaeology of the Taman Peninsula.
In the XIX century on the Taman arheoloski were opened under barrow crypts, which opened the eyes of archaeologists masterpieces of art: painted vessels, samples of weapons, pieces of plastic art, ancient jewelry. Many items of excavation has expanded the exposure of the capital's museums, and in the Taman Museum they are presented in electronic format videos.
The exposition of the Museum consists of several sections: the history of archaeological research and cultural monuments of the life and art of the ancient settlement of VI century BC – middle of the XVIII century; the history of ancient cities and Greek settlers of the Peninsula from the VI century BC.
The advantage of the Taman Museum is its special architectural design of the Museum building. Two exhibition halls of the United open to sunlight atrium, giving the impression of a single space by adding natural light in the exhibition. In the courtyard under the open sky grow grapes and roses, creating the impression of poetry and ancient scenes. Completes the exposition of a large portrait gallery of famous Russian archaeologists.
