White city – the world's largest collection of buildings in the style of Bauhaus, located in the center of tel Aviv. A huge complex of more than four thousand buildings, was recognized by UNESCO as part of world cultural heritage.
The style of the Bauhaus born same art school that emerged in Germany in 1919. Formed the core of her creative artists adhered innovative approaches. Breaking centuries-old tradition, they abandoned the classical architectural orders and declared functional architecture based on technologies of mass production. Buildings in the Bauhaus style at first seemed unbearable, "naked", but soon the society appreciated their clear outline. The school has made a breakthrough in the design of furniture, household appliances, glassware – many of its development today and look absolutely modern.
There were powerful international team: Germans, Americans, Hungarians, Jews, Russians. Wall painting in particular was taught by Wassily Kandinsky. The growing power of the Nazis considered the school as a hotbed of communism, promoting "degenerate art". In 1933, came to power, they immediately closed the Bauhaus.
Fleeing persecution, the teachers of the school emigrated to different countries – from the USA to the USSR. Many architects, such as Arieh Sharon and Shlomo Bernstein, went to Palestine at this time was thriving tel Aviv. Here they adopted a new architectural language to the sultry climate of Palestine: used flat roof, sun ledges, wide balconies, narrow Windows. Tel Aviv appreciates unusual for the Middle East architectural heritage. On Dizengoff street, named after the first mayor of the city, is the Bauhaus center with a library and a gallery, where the exhibition devoted to the architecture of tel Aviv. The school also organizes walking tours of the White city. On the street Bialik is also a small Museum of the Foundation Bauhaus – it occupies the premises of the first floor of the building, built in 1934. Everything here, from furniture to lamps and glazed pottery, made in the style of Bauhaus. Even the door handles in the small Museum was designed by Walter Gropius, the founder of the legendary school, survived a brutal persecution of the Nazis.
