The main square of Telč was formed in the XVI century. It occupies a narrow space between two ponds and has an elongated shape. Once on the square, many tourists believe that it stretches at least a mile. It certainly is not. The illusion of length is created by Renaissance and Baroque houses lined up in rows and competing neat ornate facades.
Designer of the historic part of the city is Margrave of Zacharias of Hradec, who very competently ruled the city. He lived in the local castle, which closes the area with narrow side. For aesthetic reasons, he made the Central city area spacious: its dimensions several times larger than the space required for normal market trading. Nowadays the square is named after its Creator.
All the merchant houses in the area combined with its arcades, so on a rainy day in these galleries you can walk freely, even without getting soaked. Each house is interesting in its own way, but especially notable mansions No. 15 and No. 61. Their facades are decorated with drawings done in the style of sgraffito.
On the Eastern side of the square you can see a few fountains and the Plague column, which is somewhat lost against a fabulous bright houses. Fountain, topped by a sculpture of St. Margaret, was established in 1611 and was previously used as a drinking water reservoir. Another fountain was built in a later period, in 1827. The Marian column was set at the beginning of the XVIII century. The famous sculptor David Lipart ordered it not a city, and the wealthy bourgeois. Also on the square are located the gallery of the painter Jan Zrzavý and local city Museum, the exhibition which tells the history of Telc. Side facade there is the temple of Jesus ' Name.
