Near the village of Aliki, about 25 km South of Limenas is the nunnery of St. Michael the Archangel - the largest and most famous temple of the Greek island of Thassos, built in honor of his patron.

It is believed that the monastery was founded by the monk Luca in 830, although the exact date is not known. The first official written sources that mention the monastery date back to the late 13th century. Today, the monastery of the Archangel Michael is the responsibility of filotheou monastery from mount Athos.

The monastery of Archangel Michael is located at an altitude of 250 m above sea level on the edge of a steep picturesque cliff top which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the endless Aegean sea and visible from afar Holy mount Athos. The cloister was built as a fortress and impresses with its grandeur and beauty. In the monastery there is the main Church room, built in 1834, two small chapels (St. Ephraim and St. Gerasimos), monastic cells and a guest room, as well as workshops, where the nuns iconography involved, Church vestments sewing and embroidery.

The monastery houses many valuable religious relics and important historical documents. The main Shrine of the monastery is part of the "Holy nail from the cross on which Jesus was crucified was the Christ.
