The melissani Photo: Underground lake Melissani

On the East coast of Kefalonia island, near the town of Sami is an amazing melissani cave and its beautiful underground lake. This place is considered one of the most beautiful natural sights in Greece.

The cave has two spacious rooms, flooded with water, and the island in the center. The approximate age of the underwater lake is 20 thousand years and its maximum depth is 14 m. the Arch of one of the halls was destroyed in the earthquake, thanks to which you can now watch the amazing play of colors of light and water. On a clear Sunny day, the rays of light fall inside the cave, and, penetrating the thick crystal clear water, creating an amazing range of colors from sky blue to dark blue. The second room is full of stalactites of different shapes and has artificial lighting (especially for tourists).

An interesting feature of the underground lake are its waters, or rather, a mixture of fresh and sea water. When the salt water hits the lake with a 30-meter depth, pre-cut in the ground path 14 km from Katavotres (the opposite side of the island). Once in the pond at one end and going through all the lake water, sea water, making a huge loop back to its roots.

According to local legend, in ancient times, the melissani cave was inhabited by nymphs. It is believed that the name of the cave was in honor of one of them. However, the Greeks always associated the most beautiful and picturesque places with nymphs. Most likely the cave was used as an ancient sanctuary, as its privacy and divine beauty created a very special atmosphere and required the entourage. Over time, for many years, this cave was forgotten, and only in 1951, she was accidentally discovered. When researching it was discovered many valuable artifacts (among them clay figurines of the God pan), now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli.

The cave was opened to the public in 1963 after the end of the research. For tourists was equipped with a special tunnel at the end of which expect the boat for amazing walks in the melissani underground world.
