Lake Danao Photo: Lake Danao

Lake Danao is one of the most beautiful lakes of the island of Leyte, located 18 km North-East of the city of Ormoc. The lake, shaped like a violin, covers an area of 148 hectares and is part of the national Park "Lake Danao", which also includes the mountain range of Uandiwin. The Park area is 2193 hectares. the Lake lies at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level, causing the temperature in the surrounding area slightly below the national average.

Originally the lake was called Imelda in honor of the wife of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. It was taken under state protection in June 1972. And in 1998 was renamed in Danao. Today the lake serves as a source for drinking water in at least seven cities in the Eastern province of Leyte, including the largest town of the island of Tacloban. In addition, it is also an important source for irrigation of rice fields in the towns such as the Dougie, Burauen, Pastrana and Tabon-tabon.

Danao is of volcanic origin and has appeared, most likely as a result of a major geological shift of the earth's crust, which gave the lake is such an interesting form. Around the lake are wetlands with significant ecological value. It is believed that once these lands were also part of the lake, but with time, the shore began to recede.

Today in the entire national Park and lake in particular, a variety of research work. The most serious threat to the avifauna of the lake is the illegal hunting, which involved not only local residents, but also visitors. Most often the prey of poachers become hornbills, doves, and pigeons. Another problem for the ecosystem of the lake is slash-and-burn agriculture practiced by local farmers, and illegal deforestation, which leads to the degradation of some parts of the national Park.
