The Melville lighthouse is located on a deserted South shore Balabac, part of the Palawan province. To get to it, but still worth the trip. From the lighthouse offers a wonderful view of lying on a mountainous island in the distance, belonging to the Philippines. They say the weather is good you can even see the outlines of the island of Borneo. At the lighthouse lives a caretaker who maintains it in good condition and protected from vandals.

The builders of the lighthouse were the Spaniards in the 19th century, and in 1898 he came into the possession of the Americans. For over hundreds of years, the lighthouse served as a beacon for passing ships. Today it is an amazingly beautiful building, which seems to be lined with coral, turned into a tourist attraction. A couple hundred yards from it was built another lighthouse, powered by solar batteries.

The road to the lighthouse may take several hours or even a couple of days: first you need to get to town Thio Tube on the southernmost tip of Palawan, then take a ferry to the island of Balabac. The ferry usually departs in the afternoon and arrives in the town of Balabac for dinner before it gets dark. Next day you have to take a boat to go to the South coast of the island – it takes about two hours.

The islanders are proud of the lighthouse and consider it to be their main tourist attraction. The island is Balabac famous for its beautiful coastline with many secluded coves and sandy beaches on which to relax after the journey to the lighthouse. The island is home to rare species of animals, such as the Asian mouse deer, and incredibly beautiful birds, amazing colorful plumage. Interest to tourists may represent, and culture of the indigenous inhabitants of these places – tribe "mailbags".
