The reserve of cava Grande del Cassibile Photo: the Reserve of cava Grande del Cassibile"

The reserve of cava Grande del Cassibile" is a territory of vast geographical, anthropological, archaeological, hydrological and speleological importance. It is spread over an area of 2700 hectares in the Sicilian regions Avola, Siracusa and Noto. The river Cassibile, or Casparis, as it was called by the ancient Greeks, flows through the reserve for the Millennium it has developed a number of deep canyons stretching for 10 km.

The first inhabitants of these places were Siculo – protected inaccessible cliffs and had access to water, 11-10 centuries B. C., they founded two small settlements. One was located in the North – and today its ruins can be seen from the observation deck, and the second in the opposite direction, to the South. We have heard hundreds of tombs carved in rock near one another in the six parallel levels.

At the very end of the valley the river has created a comprehensive system of small cascades with transparent and crystal-clear water. To the most beautiful of them is best to get from Avola Antica – the journey takes about half an hour. If you go beyond the cascades, you can come to the settlement of Dieri. And to further enjoy the beauty of these places is to go for a couple of kilometers further towards the source of the river in the town of the Prize, the lake, the water of which is used at HPP. Along the way you can cross a number of completely wild and natural areas and see different plants, emitting a wonderful aroma, sage, thyme, Rue, mint and oregano, as well as the bramble, ivy and oak, which creates some difficulties for inexperienced travelers. Along the river are sprawling trees – Mediterranean willow, white and black poplar, the branched grebinski and amazing Oriental plane trees, the oldest of which have a trunk diameter of 1, 5 m. Canyons of Cavagrande is the Western boundary for sycamore.

Among the typical inhabitants of the reserve can be called the olive Warbler, which breeds in the underbrush, is a small bird, typical Mediterranean maquis thickets. In the sky often seen Peregrines and Kestrels, as well as meet the falcons soaring in the air on spread wings.
