In Eleftherio-Kordelio (a suburb of the Greek city of Thessaloniki) is a small, but very interesting Railway Museum. It is located in a renovated building of the old military station on the street NEA Monastiriou.
The station was built in the late 19th century (1891-1894), when Thessaloniki was still under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Designed the station of the famous Italian architect Piero Arrigoni. For a long time, the station was extensively used, but over time lost its strategic importance and in the late 1970-ies was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. Years later Greek Railways organization passed an abandoned station under the jurisdiction of the "society of railway fans" especially for the creation of the Museum. In 2001, after carrying out a series of large-scale restoration Railroad Museum finally opened its doors to visitors.
In the room, which once housed the private office of the head of the station, today you can see a map of all the Railways of Greece, the form of railwaymen, personal items, special tools, technical manuals with detailed information on all of old steam and diesel engines, various documents, photos, old tickets and much more. In the exposition of the Railway Museum also presents and furniture from special wagons that were used by the members of the Greek Royal family.
In the yard of the Railway Museum is the pride of the Museum is the restaurant car from famous passenger trains of the luxury Orient Express (Orient Express ran between Paris and Istanbul from 1883).
