Preparations for the construction of the main Siberian stone of the Cathedral was conducted almost three years. From Moscow sent us the permission to use the peasants on the construction, but not in the summer. Sent the sample to which it was necessary to build the Church. The temple was built by Moscow experienced bricklayers in Union with the gang Ustyug builders. Construction began in 1683, and was completed in 1686, in the same year, the first in Siberia stone Church was consecrated. The Cathedral was originally called the assumption, but was later renamed St. Sophia.

The temple is located on top of the Cape Trinity and cool down the stone ramp. In 1751 to the Northern facade of the Cathedral was built on John Chrysostom's chapel, it is the Cathedral's sacristy.

From Italian culture of the Renaissance in St. Sophia Cathedral you can see the geometric cubic volume, and the completion of the temple and the decor of the facades in the old Russian style. The interior side of the St. Sophia Cathedral is typical for a large four-column temple. Originally the Cathedral inside was not painted, but soon the walls were covered with frescoes. According to some sources, the author was a famous painter Roman Nikitin, who was exiled with his brother in Tobolsk after the death of Peter I. In the mid-19th century frescoes were closed oil paintings, but soon the decision was made on the restoration of fresco paintings.

A real example of ancient arts and crafts are the doors of the main entrance to the temple, lined with metal panels. These panels presents wonder beasts: the miracle of the birds.
