Art gallery Perca Tucker is located in the heart of Townsville, on the East end of Flinders street. Today in the gallery is more than 2 thousand jobs, representing the art of North Queensland and nearby tropical region. Here you can get acquainted with modern art Queensland and Papua New Guinea, to learn about the art of the local aboriginal people and residents of the Torres Strait, to admire the works of popular artists. In addition to permanent exhibitions, the gallery regularly hosts a variety of workshops dedicated to the art, lectures, seminars, performances of artists, theatrical performances.
Every two years the gallery organizes a unique event - "Ephemera", which is held for 10 days in September. At this time the main waterfront of Townsville - the strand - converted exhibition hall: a variety of sculptures situated along a 2-kilometer strip of the surf right outside.
The building, which today houses the gallery was built in 1885 "United Bank of Australia" for their Northern office. The original building was a single story, but in the early 1930-ies was completed the second floor. In 1980, the City Council of Townsville has purchased the historic building for the first art galleries in the city. And in 1981 Art gallery was officially opened to the public - it was named in honor of grey's monument Perca Tucker, former mayor of Townsville from 1976 to 1980.
