The tropical Museum of Queensland located in Townsville in two minutes walk from the town centre, introduces the history and natural heritage of the region. Here you can find a huge collection of corals of the Great Barrier reef and historical artifacts that tell about the past of North Queensland. Exhibitions tell the story of life in the tropics, about local flora and fauna and the creatures that inhabit the depths of the ocean. Only Museum features more than 2, 5 million samples!

Corals are the main area of interest of the Museum, numerous research programs aimed at studying the evolution and current state of coral reefs. Collection of corals of this Museum is considered the most important scientific collection in the world. And scientists at the Museum have long acquired international recognition in various fields of science, primarily those that relate to the study of the sea.

Of particular interest is the collection of artifacts from the sunken English military ship "Pandora". The ship sank off the coast of North Queensland in 1791, on Board were some members of the famous mutiny on the bounty". Artifacts are located in the section of Maritime Archaeology.

The Museum was opened in 1987 as a Department of the Queensland Museum. In 2000 a new building was constructed for the collection of Museum. Built at a cost of 18 million Australian dollars.
