Troyan monastery of the Dormition of the virgin is impressive Orthodox monastery, which is the third largest in Bulgaria. It is situated in a picturesque location on the slopes of Stara Planina (the Balkan), 10 kilometers from the town of Troyan and near the village of Oreshak. Near the abode of the river Cherni Osam.
Thanks to preserved in written sources of references were able to establish that the monastery was built in the XVII century. The founder is the Abbot calistrat.
In 1835, a solemn ceremony of consecration of the new Church, erected on the site of the former. The structure, built by master Constantine from Peshtera, is a temple of the cross-domed type with a narthex, an arched gallery and a five-sided apse at the chancel. In 1847-1849, the building was decorated with paintings. Work was done an outstanding representative of the Samokov school, famous Bulgarian painter Zahari Zograf. The frescoes depict scenes from the Scriptures ("the last judgment", etc.), saints, Jesus Christ and others. In the Abbey Church survived carved wooden iconostasis of the late 30-ies of the XIX century, and in the chapel of St. Nikola – earlier carved Royal doors.

The Troyan monastery was educational center in the late nineteenth century. Now there is a library in which you can meet a rich collection of various publications. During the struggle for liberation of the Bulgarians the monastery was the place of refuge of many revolutionaries.
