In the town of Uglich on the street Sharkova, stands the convent of St. Alexis, which is the oldest of all the monasteries of the city. It is located just outside of Stone Creek, on a small hill, in the past, which bore the name of the Fiery mountain. The Foundation of the monastery occurred in 1371 with the support of the Moscow Metropolitan Alexy. As you know, Alexis has played quite an active role in political life, because it took the decision to build in local places of abode, that became a political step. In those time the Moscow Principality, which was gaining power, sought to extend its influence to other principalities.

In 1584 when the Spassky monastery was built the stone Church – the Church of Metropolitan Alexis – from the Church we have only destroyed the remains of the walls.

For a long time other monastic buildings remained wooden. Alexeevsky monastery always had more sympathy among Royal personages. In the 19th century the monastery operated an orphanage, and opened a library and a school for the children of Ministers; homeless people could eat at the monastery.

The most important feature of the monastery was visible from afar "Wonderful" Church of the assumption, equipped with three tents. Its name "Marvelous" she received immediately after erection in 1628 – at this time the city was slowly recovering from the deadly Polish-Lithuanian ruin. In the period between 1608 and 1612 was conducted the siege of Uglich poles, outside the gates of the monastery disappeared about five people. Soon the poles were able to get to the monastery, and all the inhabitants of the city was killed. Most likely, the first tent-roofed Church was built in memory of the tragically deceased citizens, because steepled churches were built in honor of blessed memory deceased, or in honor of new victories. Three massive tent had been erected as a symbolic monuments to the residents of the city of Uglich.

Assumption Church stands on an elevated basement, and on the West side adjacent to the long refectory room. The main composition is the Central part, has three white tents and the same number of apses, some overlapping with tent top of the temple. The surroundings of the Central tent is made in the form of a belt at all times, while it is slightly raised and shifted to the West, resulting in the overall composition looks bulkier. The decoration of the walls is made very simply, because they shade the tents and along the edges of the faces are the tabs-droving, which gives a light and delicate appearance. The decoration of the apses is made using the elegant column-type belts, which give the Church a festive look. In the inner part of the Church is small, because the tents are made "blind".

Near the Dormition Church is later built the Church of St. John the Baptist, appeared in 1681. The building of the Cathedral are quite massive and broad, with five huge heads arranged pretty thin on the reels. More squat Church makes wide refectory room, which further increases its stockiness compared to the next highest of the assumption Church.

Next to the apse of the Cathedral until 1917 was the monastery cemetery, in the territory of which almost 600 years buried honorary citizens of Uglich and monks. During the Soviet era, the cemetery was destroyed, and today in its place is the rose garden.

When Alekseevsky monastery operated Epiphany Church with refectory bathroom and there was a bell tower.

On the perimeter on all sides, the monastery was surrounded by a fence of stone, were and Holy gates. None of the buildings today do not exist or exists only partially, for example, the gate and fence.

In 30-ies of the 20 century the monastery was closed and some of its buildings was converted into a residence. Currently, the monastery is a functioning convent.
