Varna Opera house is a luxury building in the Empire style. It is considered one of the most beautiful in the city. The popularity of the Varna Opera can only be compared with St. Sophia, which still remains in first place in Bulgaria.

The official opening of the theatre in Varna took place on 1 August 1947. The first Director of the theater was Stefan Nikolaev, and as artistic Director was made by the famous Bulgarian tenor Piotr Raichev. The company immediately began work: the young Director Ruslan Raichev (with the assistance of choirmasters Mladenov and Manolova, artists Popov and misina) gave the first performance – an Opera by Bedrich Smetana "the bartered bride". In the future, the theatre has included in its repertoire performances of various genres, covering a large portion of not only Opera heritage of the XVIII-XIX centuries, but modern authors.

In the course of expanding creative boundaries and attract a new audience, the troupe of the Varna Opera theatre added to the repertoire of operetta. Mostly, these were classical productions of Offenbach, Strauss, Lehar. Also, the creative team has been actively working on productions of modern musicals and children's plays.

The troupe has participated in many pan-European theatrical and Opera festivals and competitions ("Varna Summer", "Opera in the open-air Theatre"). Tour of Varna Opera theatre had a lot: Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, Italy, Spain, Greece, India, Romania, Egypt, Switzerland, Germany, Austria. Special prestige of the theatre began to use, when to Varna began to come to tour the famous Opera singers (Nicolai Ghiaurov, Anna tomowa-Sintov, Maria Corelli, Nikol gyuzelev, Peter Glossop and others).

In 1999, the Varna Opera, by order of the Minister, combined with the Varna Philharmonic orchestra. Subsequently, these two government agencies began to operate as a single Institute of culture – Opera-Philharmonic Commonwealth of Varna.

Since 2010 Opera-Philharmonic Commonwealth United with the drama theatre "Stoyan Bycarol". The latter retains its name, but United earlier Opera and Philharmonic converted to the Varna state Opera.
