The Verona Cathedral is one of the main churches of the city, the location of the Episcopal chair. The Romanesque construction of the temple began in the second half of the 12th century – it was built on the site of two pre-Christian churches, destroyed during the earthquake of 1117. From the original appearance preserved only the entrance portal with a portico, decorated with winged griffins - trainee architect nicolò. Incidentally, the same architect was the author of the entrance portal of the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, dedicated to the patron Saint of Verona to Saint Zeno, and Ferrara Cathedral.
Above the entrance to the Cathedral you can see the relief image of the blessed virgin Mary holding in her arms the Infant Jesus. In addition, the portal is decorated with scenes from the old Testament and the figures of two knights from medieval epic of Roland and Oliveira. Here you can see the real works of art: "the entombment" Nicolo Golfino, "the Ascension of the virgin" by Titian and "adoration of the Magi" Liberale da Verona.
Near the Cathedral is the cloister, also built in the Romanesque style. He framed duplex roofed gallery of red marble.
