St. Peter's Church Photo: St. Peter's Church

The Church of St. Peter is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the Austrian capital. The Church was founded on the site of an ancient Christian Church in the year 792 on behalf of the Emperor Charlemagne. The old Church has not been preserved, so in its place, construction began on a new Church in 1701, under the guidance of Gabriele Montagny, who later was replaced by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. By 1722, most of the building was completed, and in 1733 the Church was opened. The erection of the Church was begun by order of Leopold I.

Under the supervision of a Hildebrandt was built the Church building, which in appearance is very similar to the Church of St. Peter in Rome. The Church building is unusual both in its architecture (oval shape) and colour scheme (the dome is made in emerald color. Except Lucas Hildebrandt on the construction of the Church worked Andrea Altomonte, under whose leadership has been built gantry extension. The building is in the Baroque style, which in this place it looks very organic and solemnly.

The interior of the Church was created by Matthias Stein, painted the famous frescoes by the Italian artist Andrea Pozzo. However, after the death of Pozzo, in 1713 Johann Michael Rottmayer began to decorate the interior to your liking.

On the arc de Triomphe you can see the coat of arms of the Emperor Leopold I. the Altar in Baroque style, was created by Antonio Galli Bibiena and Martin Altomonte.

For many years the painting was gradually getting dark, and the interior began to get gray. From 1998 to 2004, the Church held a large-scale reconstruction, which returned the paintings to their original form.
