The Leopold Museum, housed in the Museumsquartier in Vienna, is home to one of the largest collections of modern Austrian art, featuring artists such as Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka. The Museum contains the world's largest collection of works by Egon Schiele.

The Museum was founded on the basis of a private collection, which was collected by Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold. Rudolf Leopold, an occupational therapist, began collecting art in the 1950s. He was interested in the works of artists who emerged in that period, but has already managed to win glory on the art market.

The government of Austria in 1994 acquired 5,000 works of Rudolf Leopold for 2200000000 shillings (€160 million) to create a Museum named Leopold. The Fund pursued exclusively charitable purposes. Himself Leopold was appointed a life Director of the Museum.

The construction of the Museum began in 1999 opposite the National art gallery in the centre of the capital. The Museum was built by architects from the office of Ortner&Ortner. The building is rectangular in shape, has an area of 12600 square meters. In the Museum, a wide staircase leads (Sirina meters). Inside the building, all floors are made of oak parquet. The Grand opening of the Museum took place on September 21, 2001, which was attended by the President himself Thomas the Enema.

The Leopold Museum is the world's largest collection of works by Egon Schiele, young expressionist, who died at the age of 28. Also presents the work of another pioneer of modern painting – Gustav Klimt. In the Museum you can see works of other famous artists: Oskar Kokoschka, Karl Szucha, Leopold Hauer, Alfred Kubin, Kolo Moser, Anton Romak, Josef Hoffmann, albert Paris gütersloh and others.

Painting, graphics and original furniture in the art Nouveau style are the permanent collection of the Museum.
