There are two versions of the appearance of amber. First, a scientific version of the view that amber was formed from the resin of pine trees that grew in Europe and fifty million years ago. As a result of exposure to water and some other, not well-known chemical compounds, a reaction occurred, favoring the appearance of this stone.
The second version is a beautiful, romantic legend. She says that long ago lived beneath the sea goddess Jurate. She's under the water was a beautiful amber Palace. One day she met the handsome fisherman named Kastytis, and they loved each other. When this was learned, the God of Persons, he went into a rage and drowned a simple fisherman, who dared to love a goddess. After that, he sent lightning into the underwater amber Palace, destroying it and breaking into small pieces. They say that large amber stones are fragments of a former Palace, and small stones, which people find on the beach – this is the tears of the goddess by her lover.

There is an opinion that amber has magical healing properties. So in the old days it often made amulets, intended to protect their owners from diseases and misfortunes. Say treated amber loses its curative and miraculous properties.
