In the historical centre of Kamyshin is the oldest structure in the city - St. Nicholas Church, built in 1775. In the era of Catherine the great was forbidden to bury in urban temples (after the plagues, out of fear of infection) and in Place (in our day - Kamyshin), it was decided to build a temple at the newly formed cemetery.
Nicholas Church was the smallest in the city and in 1825 the Church was rebuilt, increasing the inner area. The decoration of the Church of the steel columns of the portico and spherical trinadcatiletniy dome. In 1909 the architect Paul develops the project of a new large temple in the name of St. Nicholas, but the outbreak of the First world war and the revolution did not allow the plan to succeed. Looted the temple building in the post-revolutionary period was engaged in the warehouse, and eventually deserted temple building came into complete disrepair.
In December 1944 by the incredible efforts of the parish Church was opened, but construction work, singing and collecting donations were banned. Between 1950 and 1970 in the Volgograd region there were only two temples, one of which Kamyshin. In the 1980s there was built a new bell tower (on the ruins) and repaired the temple. In 1985, on the day of Holy Pascha for the first time in many years, gave permission to the bell ringing.
In our days completely renovated in 2012, the Church of St. Nicholas Cathedral is listed in the list of protected monuments of history and architecture. Near the Cathedral is the ancient ruined gravestones of the cemetery and the necropolis at the Church. The Cathedral houses the library, Sunday school and family center skills and crafts.
